Deck Railing Calculator
A deck railing calculator returns the balusters and posts a railing run needs. It solves for the fewest balusters that keep the gap under the 4 in. maximum clear opening. It also checks whether the 36 in. minimum guard height applies. A 12 ft run with 1.5 in. balusters needs 26 balusters with a gap of about 3.9 in.

How to Calculate Deck Railing
The run is split by the balusters into equal gaps. Each baluster takes up its width, and the gaps between them must stay at or under 4 in. The calculator finds the fewest balusters that keep every gap within that limit, then reports the actual gap that results. Posts are counted from the post spacing you enter, plus one at the end of the run. The guard height rule applies when the deck surface is more than 30 in. above grade.
Example: 12 ft railing run, 1.5 in. balusters, 4 in. maximum opening
A 12 ft railing run, 1.5 in. balusters, 4 in. maximum opening, 6 ft post spacing, deck 3 ft above grade: 1. Run length: 12 × 12 = 144 in. 2. Balusters: (144 − 4) ÷ (1.5 + 4) = 25.5, rounded up to 26 balusters 3. Actual gap: (144 − 26 × 1.5) ÷ 27 = 3.89 in., under the 4 in. limit 4. Posts: 12 ÷ 6 = 2, plus one, = 3 posts 5. Guard height: deck is 36 in. above grade, which is more than 30 in., so 36 in. minimum applies Buy 26 balusters and 3 posts. The top rail must be at least 36 in. above the deck.
Deck Railing: Compare Scenarios
| Scenario | Balusters Needed | Posts Needed | Actual Gap Between Balusters | Required Railing Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short run (8 ft, 1.5 in. balusters) | 17 | 3 | 3.92 in | 36 in. minimum |
| Medium run (12 ft, 1.5 in. balusters) | 26 | 3 | 3.89 in | 36 in. minimum |
| Long run (20 ft, 1.5 in. balusters) | 43 | 5 | 3.99 in | 36 in. minimum |
What Is Deck Railing?
A deck railing calculator estimates the balusters and posts a railing run needs. The 4 in. maximum opening keeps a small child from getting through between balusters, and the height rule keeps the top rail high enough to act as a guard. The count depends on the run length and the baluster width, so a wider baluster needs fewer pieces.
Deck Railing: Pros and Cons
Pros
- Solves for the fewest balusters that keep every gap at or under the 4 in. limit, instead of leaving you to space them by eye
- Shows the actual gap that results, so you can check it against the code limit before you cut
- Reports the guard height rule with the 30 in. trigger, so a low deck is not over-built
Cons
- Post spacing is your own design choice, not a code figure. Check your post and rail manufacturer for the maximum span between posts
- Does not check stair railings, which have their own height and baluster rules, or the 4-in. sphere limit that some codes apply in addition
- Does not size the top rail, the post connections, or the lateral load on the guard. Those need the manufacturer instructions or an engineer
Deck Railing: What a Pro Checks
- Measure the gap between the faces of the balusters, not the center spacing. The 4 in. limit applies to the clear opening. (Anne Arundel County 2021 IRC deck guide, page 1)
- Check the guard height against the deck height above grade before you buy. Guards are required above 30 in. and must be at least 36 in. tall. (Anne Arundel County 2021 IRC deck guide, page 1)
- Confirm the post spacing with the rail manufacturer, since it is set by the system, not by this calculator. (Anne Arundel County 2021 IRC deck guide, page 1 notes)
Frequently Asked Questions
How many balusters do I need for a 12 ft deck railing?
For 1.5 in. wide balusters, 26 balusters keep the gap at about 3.9 in., under the 4 in. limit. Wider balusters need fewer pieces, and narrower ones need more.
How high does a deck railing need to be?
Anne Arundel County's 2021 IRC deck guide requires a railing at least 36 in. above the decking when the deck is more than 30 in. above grade. Lower decks may not need a guard under this rule, but confirm with your building department.
What is the 4 inch rule on deck railings?
The maximum clear opening between balusters is 4 in., so a small child cannot pass through. The gap is measured between the faces of the balusters, not from center to center.
How far apart should deck railing posts be?
That depends on the railing system and the manufacturer. This calculator uses the post spacing you enter and does not set one for you. Check the manufacturer instructions and local code before you set the posts.
