Educational use only, not professional advice
The calculators on this site are for general informational and educational purposes only. They estimate the quantity of material a project is likely to need. They are not structural engineering advice, or a substitute for a licensed contractor, architect, or structural engineer who can assess your specific site, soil, loads, and local requirements. A few calculators compare your numbers to published minimums (such as IRC dimensions). That comparison is not a determination that your project complies with your local code, which may amend those minimums.
Not structural, engineering, or code advice
None of the calculators on this site are intended to size load-bearing structures, determine footing depth or reinforcement for a structural application, or confirm compliance with any building code. Requirements for thickness, reinforcement, span, depth, and setback vary by jurisdiction and by the specific loads a structure will carry. Always check your local building department and, for anything structural or permitted, consult a licensed professional before you build.
Calculator limitations
Every calculator uses simplified geometry and a stated waste allowance, described in the "How to Calculate" section on that calculator's page. In particular:
- Volume and area calculators assume flat, uniform, regularly shaped surfaces (a rectangle, a circle, or a combination of them) on a properly prepared subgrade. An irregular shape, a sloped or uneven base, or a non-standard layout will need more material than the geometry alone suggests.
- Waste percentages are general guidance from the sources cited on each calculator's page, not a measurement of your specific project. Complex cuts, an inexperienced installer, or a difficult layout typically need more waste allowance than the default.
- No calculator on this site sizes structural reinforcement (rebar, footings, joists, headers) for load-bearing purposes. Where a calculator mentions reinforcement, it is for estimating material quantity only, not for structural design.
- Coverage rates, bag yields, and similar figures come from the specific products cited in each calculator's Sources section. A different brand or formulation may cover, weigh, or yield differently - check the bag or can you're actually buying.
Accuracy
We make a good-faith effort to keep the formulas accurate and the cited figures current, but we make no warranty - express or implied - as to the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any result. Standards, codes, and manufacturer specifications change over time and may not reflect the current requirement in your area at the time you use the calculator. Use these tools as a starting point for your shopping list, and verify important numbers against your local building code, a current product spec sheet, or a qualified professional before you buy materials or begin work.
Your responsibility
You're responsible for the measurements you enter and for checking that the result makes sense before you rely on it. A calculator can only be as accurate as its inputs - double-check dimensions like length, width, and thickness against your own site measurements before using a result to place an order.
Sources, links, and affiliate disclosure
Some calculators cite or link to outside sources - building codes, industry standards bodies, trade associations, and manufacturer spec sheets - for the figures they use. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their content, accuracy, or availability. rightquantity.com does not currently participate in any affiliate program or receive payment for any link or recommendation on this site; if that changes, this page will be updated to disclose it before the change takes effect.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, rightquantity.com and its creators are not liable for any loss or damage - including wasted materials, project delay, property damage, or personal injury - arising from your use of, or reliance on, any calculator or result on this site.
