Gutter Calculator

A gutter calculator returns the gutter sections, downspouts, hangers, and end caps for a roof run. It sizes downspouts from the roof area draining into the run, using 600 sq ft per 2x3 in. downspout or 1,200 sq ft per 3x4 in. downspout. It counts gutter in 10 ft sections and hangers at your chosen spacing.

How to Calculate Gutter

Downspout count is sized to the roof area actually draining into this gutter run, not the gutter's length. A commonly published gutter-sizing guideline treats a 2x3 in. downspout as able to handle up to about 600 sq ft of roof, and a larger 3x4 in. downspout up to about 1,200 sq ft. The calculator divides your roof area by the selected downspout's capacity and rounds up. Gutter sections and hangers instead scale off the gutter's linear length. Sectional aluminum gutter is commonly sold in 10 ft lengths. Hangers are spaced at a chosen interval (commonly 24-36 in.) along the full run, with one extra hanger added for the run's starting end.

Example: 150 ft of gutter draining a 1,500 sq ft roof section

150 ft of gutter draining a 1,500 sq ft roof section, using 2x3 in. downspouts (600 sq ft capacity each), 36 in. hanger spacing: 1. Recommended downspouts: ceil(1,500 ÷ 600) = 3 2. Gutter sections (10 ft each): ceil(150 ÷ 10) = 15 3. Hangers: ceil((150 × 12) ÷ 36) + 1 = ceil(50) + 1 = 51 4. End caps: 2 (one for each open end of the run) That's 15 ten-foot gutter sections, 3 downspouts, 51 hangers, and 2 end caps.

What Is Gutter?

A gutter calculator converts a roofline's length and the roof area it drains into a materials list: gutter sections, downspouts, hangers, and end caps. It helps plan a new gutter installation or replacement. Downspout count in particular is easy to under-order if it's based only on gutter length rather than the actual roof area feeding it. A large, steep, or complex roof can overwhelm an undersized downspout during heavy rain.

Gutter: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Sizes downspout count to actual roof area rather than just gutter length, catching an undersized-downspout mistake before a heavy rain does
  • Hanger count follows your chosen spacing rather than an assumed fixed interval, since manufacturers vary in their recommended spacing
  • Works for any roofline length and roof area combination

Cons

  • Doesn't account for valleys, multiple roof planes draining to the same run, or a steep pitch that concentrates runoff faster than a flat roof of the same area. All of these can call for more downspout capacity than the flat-area figure alone suggests
  • Downspout capacity figures are a commonly published planning guideline, not a single manufacturer spec. Always check your specific gutter system's own capacity rating if one is provided
  • Doesn't size splash blocks, extensions, or underground drainage for where the downspouts discharge. See the French Drain calculator for routing water away from a foundation

Gutter: What a Pro Checks

  • Size downspouts to the roof area draining into the run, not just the gutter's length. A large, steep, or complex roof section can overwhelm an undersized downspout in heavy rain.
  • Space hangers toward the closer end of the 24-36 in. range in regions with heavy snow or ice load.
  • Check your specific gutter system's own downspout capacity rating if the manufacturer publishes one. The 600/1,200 sq ft figures here are a commonly published guideline, not one product's spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many downspouts do I need?

It depends on the roof area draining into that gutter run, not just the gutter's length. A common guideline is one 2x3 in. downspout per 600 sq ft of roof, or one larger 3x4 in. downspout per 1,200 sq ft. A 1,500 sq ft roof section would need 3 of the smaller downspouts or 2 of the larger ones.

How far apart should gutter hangers be spaced?

Commonly 24-36 in. apart. Check your specific gutter system's installation instructions. Closer spacing (toward the 24 in. end) is often recommended in regions with heavy snow or ice load.

What size gutter sections do I need to buy?

Sectional aluminum gutter is commonly sold in 10 ft lengths. Divide your total gutter run by 10 and round up. Gutter formed on-site to an exact length doesn't have this consideration.

Does a bigger downspout mean I need fewer of them?

Yes. A larger 3x4 in. downspout handles roughly double the roof area of a standard 2x3 in. downspout (about 1,200 sq ft vs. 600 sq ft), so fewer larger downspouts can cover the same roof area as more smaller ones.

Why does my gutter overflow during heavy rain?

Most commonly, the downspouts are undersized or too few for the roof area draining into that run. If the gutter itself is clear of debris but still overflows in heavy rain, check the downspout capacity against the guideline here before assuming the gutter size itself is the problem.
