Lawn Mowing Calculator
A lawn mowing calculator returns the hours a mowing job takes and, if you enter an hourly rate, its labor cost. It divides the lawn area by an effective mowing rate, which is deck width times travel speed times 5,280 feet per mile, times an efficiency percentage for overlap and turns. Cost is time times the hourly rate.

How to Calculate Lawn Mowing
A mower cutting a strip `width` wide at `speed` covers `width × speed × 5,280` sq ft per hour if it never overlapped a pass or slowed for a turn. That's the theoretical field capacity, the same concept used to estimate coverage rate for any machine that works in passes (a sprayer, a seeder, a mower). Real mowing always overlaps passes slightly and loses time turning at the end of each row, so this calculator applies an efficiency factor to get the effective rate. The default is 75%, a practical planning assumption. Simple, open, rectangular lawns run more efficient than a lawn full of beds, trees, and tight corners. The calculator divides the lawn area by the effective rate to get time. Cost, if a rate is entered, is just time × hourly rate.
Example: 5,000 sq ft lawn, 42 in. deck, 2.5 mph, 75% efficiency
A 5,000 sq ft lawn, 42 in. deck, 2.5 mph, 75% efficiency: 1. Deck width in feet: 42 ÷ 12 = 3.5 ft 2. Theoretical rate: 3.5 × 2.5 × 5,280 = 46,200 sq ft/hr 3. Effective rate: 46,200 × 0.75 = 34,650 sq ft/hr 4. Time: 5,000 ÷ 34,650 ≈ 0.14 hours (about 8.7 minutes). At this rate, a full acre (43,560 sq ft) would take about 1.26 hours. That is in the same ballpark as the "about an acre an hour" rule of thumb often used for a 42-48 in. deck, which is a reasonable sanity check on the formula.

|---|---|
| Small (2,000 sq ft yard) | 0.06 hours |

| Large (43,560 sq ft, 1 acre) | 1.26 hours |
What Is Lawn Mowing?
A lawn mowing calculator estimates how long a mowing job will take, and what it costs at an hourly labor rate, from the lawn's area, the mower's deck width, and how fast it travels. It's built around the same effective-field-capacity idea used to estimate any coverage-based job time. It is useful for a lawn care business quoting a job, or a homeowner deciding whether a wider mower is worth it.
Lawn Mowing: Pros and Cons
Pros
- Uses the same effective-vs-theoretical field capacity approach used for estimating any pass-based coverage job, not a made-up flat rate
- Separates deck width, speed, and efficiency so you can see which one moves the estimate most for your situation
- Gives a labor cost estimate directly, useful for quoting a mowing job at an hourly rate
Cons
- Doesn't account for time spent bagging clippings, trimming edges, blowing off walkways, or loading/unloading equipment. Only the actual mowing pass time
- Assumes a fairly open, simple lawn shape. A lawn with a lot of beds, trees, slopes, or tight corners will run well below the default 75% efficiency
- Travel speed and efficiency are planning assumptions, not measured figures for your specific mower and lawn. Adjust them based on your own experience for a more accurate estimate
Lawn Mowing: What a Pro Checks
- Lower the efficiency input below the 75% default for a lawn with a lot of beds, trees, slopes, or tight corners. Those features cut into the real-world coverage rate more than an open, simple lawn shape does.
- Add time separately for trimming, edging, blowing off walkways, and bagging clippings. This estimate only covers the actual mowing pass time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to mow an acre?
With a 42-48 in. deck at a typical 2-2.5 mph pace and reasonable efficiency, roughly an hour is a common rule of thumb. This calculator's defaults land close to that for a 43,560 sq ft (1 acre) lawn. A wider deck, faster ground speed, or a more open lawn shape can cut that time meaningfully.
What does "efficiency" mean in this calculator?
It's the gap between the theoretical coverage rate (deck width x speed, with zero overlap or turning loss) and what actually gets covered in practice. Every real mowing pass overlaps the previous one slightly and loses time turning at the end of each row. 75% is a reasonable starting assumption for an open, simple lawn. A lawn with a lot of obstacles runs lower.
Does a wider mower deck always mow faster?
In open areas, yes. Coverage rate scales directly with deck width. But a wider deck is often less maneuverable around tight corners, beds, and obstacles, which can lower the real-world efficiency factor enough to offset some of that gain on a complex lawn.
How do I estimate mowing cost for a lawn care job?
Estimate the mowing time with this calculator, then multiply by your hourly labor rate (or your target hourly revenue rate, if you're pricing a job). Remember this only covers active mowing time. Add time for trimming, blowing, bagging, and drive time between jobs separately.
Why does travel speed matter more on a wider mower?
Coverage rate is width times speed, so the two multiply together. Doubling either one roughly doubles the coverage rate (before efficiency loss). A wider deck moving slowly and a narrower deck moving quickly can end up with a similar effective rate.
